On July 11, 2008, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited announced its issuing 4 million pieces of the HKD 20 "Commemorative HKD Banknotes of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games" on the occasion of the coming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The design on the front of the note is the column architecture of the cradle of ancient Olympic Games, the emblem of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. On the back is the main venue of Beijing Olympic Games – the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.
With the approval of the International Olympic Committee and Beijing Organizing Committee for Olympic Games, and under the No. 5/2008 administrative regulation of the Macao S.A.R., Bank of China Macao branch was authorized to issue 4 million pieces of MOP 20 commemorative banknotes for the 29th Olympic Games on 13 July, 2008. The design on the front of the note is the emblem of Beijing Olympic Games, the column architecture of the cradle of ancient Olympic Games and Bank of China Tower in Macao. On the back is the National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest embedded with a traditional Chinese auspicious cloud pattern, a Macau style Lotus pattern and symbolized multicolor sports graphics as well as the image element of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The design of the Olympic commemorative notes reflects the concept of "Macao Joining Hands with Olympic Games" for inheritance and promotion of the Olympic Games spirit.
