Account Closure Service
In line with the Banking Code of Practice (2025) and our bank’s policies, we are committed to providing a seamless account closure process. Details are as follows:
To close a Personal Transactional or At Call Account, you need to attend your local branch in person or contact us via telephone. We may need to see your ID documents.
If you wish to close your credit card account then please call our 24 hour Customer Service Hotline.
To ensure the Account closure goes smoothly, please ensure that you:
- don’t have any outstanding cheques to be presented;
- if the account has a positive balance, withdraw all your funds from the account before you close it or provide details of where and how you would like the funds disbursed (in circumstances where bank cheque is required, a fee may be payable as set out in our Schedule of Fees and Charges);
- cancel all periodic payments and direct debits (you can contact us to cancel a direct debit arrangement on your account and we’ll do this promptly. You will need to contact the merchant directly if you’ve set up recurring payments using your Bank of China card details such as for a gym membership); and
- if your account is in negative balance, pay that amount back including any accrued charges such as interest and outstanding fees.
The account can only be closed once any pending debit card transactions have been posted.
Requests to close an account with negative balance may be declined.
Once an Account is closed it can’t be re-opened. You may open a new Account by attending your local branch.
After you have successfully closed your account, make sure you destroy any linked cards by cutting through the chip, magnetic strip and security code on the back.
Closing an account that is in credit
If we close an account of yours under its Terms and Conditions that is in credit, we:
a) will, if appropriate, give you reasonable notice of the closure;
b) will, if appropriate, pay you the amount of the credit balance (for example where we have your payment account details); and
c) may charge you an amount that is our reasonable estimate of the costs of closing your account.
