Great Wall International Dual Currency EMV UnionPay Debit Card

The Great Wall International Dual Currency EMV UnionPay Debit Card (GWI Debit Card) is a Bank of China issued UnionPay Debit Card which can be linked to either or both an AUD and a CNY Bank of China (Australia) Limited Account. The GWI Debit Card provides Bank of China customers with low cost, convenient payment and cash services in Australia and unlocks easy and low cost payment and cash service in China.

Functions & Features

1. Global Use

The GWI Debit Card can be used at any POS terminal displaying the UnionPay Logo (UnionPay POS Terminal), any ATM displaying the UnionPay Logo (UnionPay ATM) and any Bank of China ATM.

2. Access to your AUD & CNY Transactional and At Call Accounts

The GWI Debit Card can be linked to either or both an AUD and a CNY Bank of China Transactional and At Call Account. Linking the accounts allows you to access the Auto-link function.

3. Auto-link between AUD & CNY Transactional and At Call Accounts

Auto-link is a feature that applies if you have both an AUD and a CNY Bank of China Account linked to your Card.

When using your GWI Debit Card in Mainland China to withdraw money from ATMs or to pay for goods and services, payment will default to your linked CNY Account. If you do not have a linked CNY Account or if there are insufficient funds in your CNY Account to complete the transaction, payment will default to your linked AUD Account. Transactions will not draw partially from different currency Linked Accounts. You must have sufficient funds in one Linked Account to complete a transaction.

In countries and regions other than Mainland China, when using your GWI Debit Card to withdraw money from ATMs, or to pay for goods and services, payment will default to your linked AUD Account. If the funds in your linked AUD Account are not sufficient for the full payment of the transaction, one of the following will occur. If you have not set up auto-link from a CNY Account to your linked AUD Account, the transaction will be declined. If you have set up auto-link from a CNY Account to your linked AUD Account, payment will then default to that linked CNY Account. If there are insufficient funds in that linked CNY Account, the transaction will be declined.

4. QuickPass contactless transactions

You may authorise a transaction with your GWI Debit Card by tapping your Card on a contactless UnionPay POS Terminal. Transactions are subject to daily transaction limits.

5. Online purchases

With the UnionPay Online Payment (UPOP) facility enabled, you may authorise online transactions using your GWI Debit Card without presenting your card by either:

  • Providing your GWI Debit Card details to online merchants accepting UPOP; or
  • Linking your GWI Debit Card to a PayPal Australia account, WeChat account or AliPay account and paying for online purchases via PayPal, WeChat or AliPay.

6. QR Code payment

Use the Bank of China (Australia) APP to scan the QR code at merchants accepting UnionPay QR code payment in China and where available at a limited number of merchants in Australia.

7. Choice of card types

Different GWI Debit Card products are available to suit all customers. Current card types are: Classic Card; Student Card; and Gold Card. You can apply for a GWI Debit Card product to suit your needs.
