Security Alert Regarding Strengthening Prevention of Telecom and Internet Fraud Risks

Dear Valued Customers,

In response to the escalating incidents of telecom and internet fraud targeting customers of local financial institutions in Canada, we wish to provide you with critical security guidelines to ensure the safety of your accounts and assets:

1.Fraudsters may impersonate government officials, bank staff, telecom company representatives, or even individuals you know. They employ various means, including emails, letters, SMS, phone calls, and online chats, to perpetrate fraud. Do not disclose any personal information to unfamiliar individuals, including, but not limited to, bank account numbers, debit card details, mobile banking/online banking login credentials, various login passwords, registered mobile numbers with the bank, one-time dynamic passwords, etc.

2.Fraudsters may employ illicit methods to spoof official Bank of China Canada’s phone numbers. Refrain from accepting calls from unidentified sources and exercise caution regarding requests related to your bank account, mobile banking/online banking, debit card, credit card information, such as requests for bank transfers, loans, account freezes/unfreezes, service activation/deactivation, verification or cancellation of credit card transactions, points redemption, prize claims, password resets, contact number changes, etc., whether they originate from online acquaintances or strangers.

3.We will not send clickable links to customers through email, SMS, or online chats. Do not open any suspicious links in emails or SMS to mitigate the risk of data theft.

4.Cultivate responsible internet practices, including installing antivirus software, routinely updating applications, web browsers, and operating systems, and frequently changing passwords or utilizing multi-factor authentication to minimize internet fraud risks.

5.Ensure that your bank account is exclusively used for your personal banking transactions. If you identify any suspicious or unauthorized transactions, please promptly notify us.

If you suspect that you have inadvertently divulged personal information or bank account details to fraudsters, or if you have incurred losses due to fraud, please cease all communication and immediately contact our customer service hotline at (800) 669-5566 or (905) 771-6886. Additionally, report the incident to the relevant authorities.

If you harbor doubts about emails, letters, SMS messages, or calls purportedly originating from the bank, apart from dialing the customer service numbers provided above, you can also send an email to boccanada@bankofchina.ca to verify the authenticity of the communication. Please refrain from directly responding to suspicious emails or SMS messages or dialing contact numbers supplied in questionable SMS messages.

We sincerely thank you for choosing Bank of China (Canada) as your financial institution. We remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the security of your financial information.

This advisory is issued with utmost consideration for your security.

Sincerely,

Bank of china (Canada)
