2023-11-30
Dear customers,
Scams and fraud have been on the rise in recent years, not just in New Zealand but across the whole world. Many people and businesses are caught in scams each year, resulting in serious financial losses. Anyone can be the victim of these scams and fraud events at any time. That’s why Bank of China (New Zealand) Limited (BOCNZ) finds it important to let you know what to be aware of and the necessary steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Scams and Fraud
Scams are intended to manipulate or trick people into giving away their personal details, financial details, or money. A scam becomes fraud when the individual responsible for the scam obtains and uses someone’s personal or financial details or money under false pretences for their gain. Fraud is a criminal offence.
Common types of scams include:
- Phishing (E-mail scams)
- Social media scams
- Invoice scams
- Scam calls
- Money and investment scams
- Romance scams
- Text message scams
Tips for keeping you protected from scams and fraud:
- Be suspicious and take time to research or think before engaging with a person or opportunity.
- Do not disclose your Internet banking login details to anyone, including any of your family members, friends, or bank staff. Remember, BOCNZ will never ask you for login details.
- Avoid disclosing your personal information, including your ID number, passport information, account number and other security details, to any suspicious or unverified person/website.
- Refrain from opening emails from unknown senders and avoid logging into Internet banking through links in suspicious emails.
- If you receive a call from an organisation and are unsure of its authenticity, disconnect and call back using the organisation’s publicly listed phone number.
- Exercise caution when making payments on unfamiliar websites or payment platforms. When in doubt, consult people you know and trust.
