In 1914, without notifying Bank of China, Ministry of Finance commissioned the American Bank Note Company to print redeemable notes bearing the portrait of Yuan Shikai in one yuan, five yuan, ten yuan, 50 yuan and 100 yuan. The total face value was 600 million yuan.
In April, 1915, these new banknotes sunk in the sea during the shipment from the U.S., and only a small part was saved. Soon after that, Yuan Shikai died, leaving the banknotes unissued.
