After Li Yuanhong took office of President of the Republic of China in 1916, American Bank Note Company, commissioned by Bank of China, printed sample banknotes bearing the portrait of Li Yuanhong in 1917. However, the banknotes were never issued because of Li Yuanhong's resignation on July 14 as a result of such incidents as Zhang Xun's restoration and Machang Rally led by Duan Qirui. This set of redeemable notes featured five denominations: 1 yuan, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 50 yuan, and 100 yuan.
