Miss Ho Mei-Wa, Organizer of "The Best Home-made Soup for Seniors Competition", gave a talk in the Home-made Soup for Seniors Seminar. In simple words, she introduced the properties of various Chinese herbal medicines, things to pay attention to regarding those common illnesses among senior adults. Miss Ho further reminded the volunteers that other than preparing soups in accordance with the seasons, special attention should be paid to the health conditions of the seniors. Participants to the seminar not only learned more about the basis and skills of preparing home-made soup, but also gained more knowledge of the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicines and ways to eat healthy.

Well before the seminar, BOC has been invited by Rotaract Club of Guia to donate sets of electronic soup cookers and soup ingredients, and to participate into such a meaningful event. Those home-made soups to be prepared by volunteers has been scheduled to be distributed to numerous senior residents who live alone and have been registered with the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Uniao Gerald as Associacoes dos Moradores de Macau, The Women's General Association of Macau, Obra das Maes and Caritas de Macau. The aim of this seminar was to help the volunteer workers of BOC and the 5 unions/associations to learn more about the use of Chinese herbal medicines and the skills in the preparation of soups, and more importantly, to draw more attention to the well-being of those seniors adults who live alone and under the care of the associations and to show these seniors we care!
Miss Elaine Mok, President of Rotaract Club of Guia, thanked BOC for their participation and donations, the School of Medicine of Macao University of Science and Technology for the printing of the book "Home-made Soup for Seniors Recipe", which would be a valuable reference of healthy soups for the seniors in Macau, and the Macau Science Center for waiving the rental charges of the venue and hosting.

Mr. Lao Chak-Kong, Deputy General Manager of BOC and Chairman of the BOC Leisure Committee said in his speech that BOC, adhering to the principle of "the benefit for the community is as important as the profit of the bank", has organized and participated in many community care events. Furthermore, this Home-made Soup for Seniors Seminar was very meaningful because other than the donation of electronic soup cookers and ingredients, a large number of volunteer workers would be needed to follow up on the on-going soup-making process in order to achieve the ultimate goal of treating our seniors with good home-made soups; Therefore, to teach the volunteers how to make good soups would be important. After this event, volunteer workers of BOC and all other 5 unions/associations would arrange appropriate times to meet and deliver the soups to seniors who live alone, so those seniors would feel our love and care while enjoying those home-made soups prepared by our volunteers.
At the end of the seminar, volunteer workers said the seminar was very meaningful too. They have learned the skills of making good soups in such a short time and would definitely be devoted to help make this "Home-made Soup for Seniors" event a successful one.
After the seminar, all volunteers, hosted by staff members of the Macau Science Center, had a tour around the center and learned more about the development of science education in Macau. Ms. Ho Teng-Iat, President of the General Assembly of Obra das Maes, and Mr. Pun Chi-Meng, Secretary General of Caritas Macau both have attended the seminar.
