On August 21, BOC President Li Lihui presented No. 002008 HKD and MOP Olympic commemorative banknotes to Mr. Samaranch, IOC lifetime Honorary President at BOC Olympic On-site Showcasing Center, Beijing Olympic Green. This precious gift, as a donation to International Olympic Committee by Bank of China, will be treasured and displayed permanently at the Olympic Museum located at Quai d’Ouchy, Lausanne, Switzerland. At the ceremony, President Samaranch expressed gratitude on behalf of IOC to the Bank’s contribution to the Olympic Games. With prominent strength and devoted efforts to the course of Olympics, Bank of China leaves its own mark on Olympic Museum, an eternal monument.
As approved by IOC and BOCOG, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Ltd. and Bank of China Macau Branch, as the local note-issuing bank, have issued 2008 Olympic Games commemorative banknote denominated HKD 20 and MOP 20 respectively. This is the first Olympic-themed banknotes in the history of the Olympic Games and the first commemorative banknotes issued in Hong Kong and Macao. As proceeds generated from the sale of the 4 million pieces of HKD Olympic Banknote will be donated for charity cause, the banknotes embody the spirit of “people’s Olympics” and bear high value of collection.
