To celebrate the approaching fourth anniversary of Beijing’s successful bid for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games and BOC’s first anniversary of the success in the Olympic sponsorship bidding, and also to promote Olympic spirits within the bank, on June 29th, Bank of China invited Mr. He Zhenliang, former IOC Executive Vice President and hero of Beijing’s Olympic bidding to deliver a lecture titled “Olympic Movement and China”. Present at the lecture were BOC Chairman Xiao Gang, Vice Chairman and President Li Lihui, Chief Supervisor Liu Ziqiang, Executive Vice President Zhou Zaiqun, Vice Chairman of BOC Hong Kong Limited Sun Changji, and other key members of Board of Directors and Board of Supervisors. Staff representatives from the Head Office as well as Beijing Branch attended the lecture.
Mr He first reviewed the origin and development of the Olympic Movement. With an easy-to-understand approach, he commented on previous Games from political, economic and social perspectives respectively, thus offering a deepened understanding of the Olympic Movement. He then moved on to explain the organizational structure, tenet and economic operation of the International Olympic Committee, providing valuable guidance for the bank in fully utilizing its rights as the Olympic sponsor. As the witness of the development of new China’s sports cause and a legendary figure who lived through Beijing’s two-time Olympic bidding, he looked back on China’s involvement in Olympic Movement and shared with audience many interesting anecdotes in the bidding process. At the end of the lecture, he exclaimed affectionately, “I am fully convinced that Beijing is capable of staging a high-level Olympics with distinctive characteristics. Let us hold hands together to build a peaceful world, a better future and fulfill a common dream.” The excellent speech was warmly applauded by the audience.
In the concluding speech followed afterwards, President Li pointed out that Mr He’s words greatly inspired and heartened the staff as well as the bank that is currently undertaking the joint-stock reform. He indicated that the Olympic Movement that values participation, the Olympic slogan of “higher, faster and stronger”, TOP partners’ experience, the undaunted spirits and daring efforts of Chinese athletes, the national involvement in bidding the Beijing Games, and the slogan for Beijing 2008 Games “One World, One Dream” shall all become precious treasury of Bank of China. It was fairly hard for Bank of China to win the bid for Olympic sponsorship, and it will be even tougher for the bank to live up to the expectations. Therefore, all the bank staff shall fully absorb the Olympic spirits, enhance competition awareness and the sense of responsibility, commit to the bank’s reform and development, and contribute to the making of a world-class bank and an outstanding Olympic Games.
