Bank of China Promotes Green Finance for High-quality Development

For a long time, Bank of China has sought to innovate in green products and services, deepen international cooperation in green finance, and promote low-carbon and environmentally friendly operations, infusing financial impetus into green and sustainable development to facilitate the high-quality development of the Chinese economy and society.

With the goal of becoming the "preferred bank for green financial services," BOC has built the "BOC Green plus" global brand and launched dozens of green financial products and services across five categories.

Notably, in green credit, it supports green industries like energy conservation, environmental protection, clean production and clean energy, as well as the low-carbon transition of high-carbon-emission industries. By the end of the first quarter of 2025, domestic green credit had increased by 964.1 billion yuan ($135.2 billion), up 31.03 percent from the end of the previous year.

In green bonds, as an underwriter, it ranks first among Chinese-funded banks in domestic underwriting scale and tops Bloomberg’s "Global Offshore Green Bonds" ranking for Chinese-funded peers in overseas scale; as an investor, it is the largest investor in green debt financing instruments of the National Association of Financial Market Institutional Investors (NAFMII); as an issuer, it has innovatively issued "Belt and Road" Sustainable Development Bonds, with funds used for renewable energy, sustainable water resources and wastewater management projects.

Internationally, BOC has signed or joined over a dozen green and ESG-related initiatives and mechanisms, including the UN Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) and Green Investment Principles (GIP) for the Belt and Road, while actively participating in international conferences like the UN Climate Change Conference and UN Biodiversity Conference, as well as the formulation of international green finance standards.

It has also implemented a green finance talent development system covering around 10,000 people and organized various promotional activities to guide employees in green office practices and energy-saving, carbon-reduction habits.

Operationally, BOC explores carbon neutrality paths, with 39 office buildings (including its headquarters and facilities in multiple locations) having achieved operational "carbon neutrality." It continues to adopt energy-saving, emission-reduction and carbon-reduction measures, investing special funds in upgrading energy-saving equipment, renewing new energy vehicles and cutting kitchen waste and other emissions, achieving notable results in fuel, water, electricity and paper conservation. To date, it has built 33 "benchmark green-built branches."
