The Vision China event, themed “Inspiration from the Past, Vision for the Future”, was co-hosted by Bank of China and China Daily in New York, United States on Sept 12, 2024.
Over the past 45 years, the friendly exchanges between the peoples of China and the US, along with mutually beneficial cooperation between enterprises, have forged numerous remarkable stories of mutual understanding and shared success, although relations of the two countries have weathered many challenges, said Ge Haijiao, chairman of BOC, in his written address to the event.
As a "financial bridge", BOC has leveraged its advantages in foreign exchange, foreign trade, and renminbi clearing to provide financial services for many landmark projects in the US. These efforts promote the China-US economic and trade cooperation while enhancing social well-being, Ge noted.
As a "financial envoy", BOC has also committed to engaging with and integrating into local communities to support projects such as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Juilliard School, which foster deeper cultural exchanges and strengthen people-to-people ties, said Ge.
Currently, China is comprehensively advancing Chinese-style modernization and high-level opening-up to the world, and deepening reform and opening-up measures in various fields will bring new and greater opportunities for China-US cooperation and exchange, Ge said.
"BOC is firmly committed to promoting trade and commerce between China and the United States, for the benefit of both societies," Ge added.
Finding the right way for China and the US to get along is crucial for both nations and the international community, said Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng.
He stated that for the past 50 years, the reopening and development of China-US relations was the most significant event in international relations and the biggest contributor to global peace and prosperity.
"History provides us with inspiration to look ahead to the future," Xie said in a keynote speech, adding that charting a proper course will be critical to international relations in the next 50 years.
"The growth of China-US relations has primarily come from the joint efforts of our peoples," he said. "We will build more bridges of dialogue and communication between our peoples to sustain the tradition of friendship."
Also speaking at the forum, Qu Yingpu, publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily, said "China-US relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world, and they must be managed well despite the risks and challenges."
He added, "mutual understanding is the foundation of friendly cooperation" and that "a modernized China represents an opportunity, rather than a challenge, to the United States."
Given that China and the US have accumulated remarkable "cognitive deficits" amid profound changes taking place in the world, it is crucial that the two peoples reacquaint themselves with a real, multidimensional and comprehensive view of each other's country, he said.
The Vision China event gathered over 200 distinguished participants from diverse sectors, including government, business, academia, research institutions, and media from both China and the US.
China Daily launched Vision China in 2018 as a bridge for communication between China and the rest of the world. Focusing on developments in both China and abroad, Vision China invites well-known opinion leaders to share their perspectives on a wide range of topics.
