The Hong Kong's gold central clearing system launched trial operations on July 7. Bank of China took a full part in the development of the system's infrastructure and successfully completed the first day of trading and settlement after the system went live.
In delivering this business launch, BOC leveraged its professional strengths in the gold market to provide domestic and overseas investors with one-stop financial services covering trading, settlement, clearing, warehousing, and delivery.
Through efficient coordination and synergy between its domestic and overseas branches, BOC assisted dozens of market participants in completing gold trading and settlement on the launch day. Its client base includes leading enterprises and financial institutions across the entire precious metals industrial chain, further boosting the efficiency of spot gold trading and market appeal.
As the designated vault for the Hong Kong's gold central clearing system, Bank of China (Hong Kong) rolled out the first batch of "Physical Gold Connect" transactions, effectively establishing a physical gold settlement channel between Shanghai and Hong Kong and enabling the linkage of the two gold markets.
BOC International Holdings, a comprehensive subsidiary under BOC, simultaneously completed gold futures trading on the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEX), enriching the risk management toolkit for gold trading and forming a full closed-loop covering gold trading and derivative risk management.
Over the years, BOC has given full play to its role as a primary cross-border financial channel, ranking among the market leaders in total gold trading volume and indicative quote market-maker trading volume for consecutive years. It has also stayed at the forefront of the market in advancing the connectivity between the Shanghai and Hong Kong gold markets.
In December 2023, BOC completed the market's first cross-border gold settlement using digital RMB, realizing cross-border application of digital RMB under the free trade account system.
In June 2025, BOCHK became the first offshore gold delivery vault of the Shanghai Gold Exchange, completing the first offshore RMB physical gold delivery and effectively expanding channels for international investors to allocate RMB assets.
BOC will continue to capitalize on its global footprint and comprehensive business strengths to build a full-spectrum integrated service system for the gold market, contributing to advancing the connectivity of the Shanghai and Hong Kong gold markets and high-level financial opening-up.
