Bank of China Holds Roadshow on the International Use of RMB in Kenya

Bank of China hosted its 2026 global roadshow series on the international use of RMB in Kenya, bringing together over 180 participants.

Participants included representatives from the Chinese embassy in Kenya, Kenya Investment Authority, Kenya Bankers Association, Cross-border Interbank Payment System Co Ltd (CIPS), major local financial institutions, and Chinese enterprises operating in the country.

Themed "Connecting East Africa, Bridging Global Finance", the event was the 11th stop of BOC's 2026 global roadshow series on the international use of RMB, following earlier stops in France, Serbia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Tanzania that span five continents. Discussions focused on new opportunities for China-Kenya cooperation, with in-depth exchanges on cross-border RMB payment and settlement, as well as investment and financing facilitation.

BOC provided a systematic overview of the latest trends in the international use of RMB and its product offerings, pathways for accessing CIPS, and integrated RMB financing solutions with case studies, helping local market participants gain a better understanding of RMB services and China's financial markets.

Experts and representatives from local financial institutions held detailed discussions before reaching broad consensus on collaborative actions to optimize cross-border payment and settlement routes, improve settlement efficiency, and strengthen financial infrastructure connectivity.

During the event, a partner plaque presentation ceremony was held. The Johannesburg branch of BOC awarded "Kenya RMB Business Partner" plaques to Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, and Diamond Trust Bank, among other financial institutions, to jointly develop the RMB business ecosystem in Africa.

BOC will continue to leverage its global network and its role as a primary channel for cross-border RMB services. Through its African RMB clearing network, BOC aims to provide more diversified and efficient cross-border financial solutions for Chinese and Kenyan companies, supporting bilateral economic, trade, and financial cooperation at a higher level.
